Beating the Body Image Blues

We all have days when we wake up and we don’t like what we see in the mirror. You don’t think any of your clothes look good, your hair isn’t behaving, you just can’t seem to feel good - so you start talking negatively about yourself and your body. Maybe for you those days are few and far between but for a lot of us they are far too frequent.

We all have different reactions to these days - reaching for the donuts, starting the latest fad diet or an unproductive, apathetic day. What can we do to turn these days around?

Tell the truth - speak positive truths over yourself. This is easier said than done on the rough days but it really can make a difference to the way that you are feeling. Look at yourself in the mirror and speak out the things that you like about yourself - physical attributes and strengths. “I love my long neck”, “I am a good leader”, “I am great at yoga” - dig deep because these words have a positive impact on us mentally and physically.

Get exercising - work out if you can, even for a few minutes. Exercise makes us feel stronger, more confident and brighter. Choose the movement that suits you best - find some peace with yoga or some power with a HIIT workout. If you are looking for a seriously body positive workout then check out the be.come project (https://thebecomeproject.com/) - it’s a game changer!

Dress for success - it can be tempting to dress down on the hard days but what we wear can influence how we feel. Put on clothes that make you feel good about yourself, that make you feel strong and confident - those feelings will become more real to you.

Self care - when we are feeling low for any reason practicing a little self care can do wonders - what do you enjoy? Do that!

Taking an action rather than dwelling in the negativity of the body image blues can take a bad day to a body positive day.

“One day I decided that I was beautiful and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. It doesn’t have to have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see.”
Gabourey Sidibe
