Inspiration | Martin Luther King

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for the sake of others?”

Martin Luther King Jr.

Sacrificing for the sake of other people, whether it is time, money or energy, has a positive impact on your community and on your own well-being.

Martin Luther King Jr. sacrificed all of these things and eventually his life to be a prominent leader in the Civil Rights movement in the US during the 1950’s and 60’s. He dreamed of a world where a person’s statement or their treatment wouldn’t be based on the color of their skin. He wanted to be part of building a better world. MLK knew that the world wouldn’t change through him alone and so challenged others to do the same - to focus on the needs of others and to do something about them!

Helping others will have a positive impact on the community around you and it will encourage other to do likewise. When people close to you see you making a difference it will make them want to do the same. Giving your time and energy will also have a positive impact on your own well-being - you will feel happier and more positive, you will have a greater sense of purpose, you will feel less stressed and in some case you might even see health benefits like a decrease in blood pressure or chronic pain.

“What are you doing for the sake of others?” Can you answer MLK’s question? We all have different skills and talents that we can use to benefit others. Take up his challenge - what will you do to make your community a better, more positive place?
