Make Time For Vacation!
52% of Americans don’t use all of their vacation days despite having less paid vacation than many other countries. American employers aren’t required to give annual leave to their employees while many other countries enjoy 4 weeks of paid vacation a year. We also rank in the top 10 most stressed countries in the world. This isn’t a coincidence.
Time off to step away from the day to day stresses, to get a change of scenery and to rest is essential to our physical and mental health. Here are a few of the reasons why making time for vacation is so important:
Reduces stress - Having time off reduces the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, in our bodies. This increases our sense of calm which has a positive impact on our physical and mental health - this can lower blood pressure, help depression and anxiety, reduce with tension headaches and more.
Better sleep - While a the first night away can leave us a little restless but once we allow ourselves to relax and leave behind the stresses and strains of regular life, our sleep becomes more restful. Sleep helps our bodies work more efficiently, heal more quickly and process emotions.
Boosts joy - Vacation is sure to make us happy but it goes deeper than that time away also gives us joy - helping us to develop a deep contentment that isn’t tied to our personal circumstances. A Harvard study has shown that those who have joy are much more likely to lead long and healthy lives.
Better performance - Vacation is actually good for our employers too - it has been shown that time away from work boosts our performance when we return - we work well, our employers get the best from us - it is a win for everyone!
If these things haven’t already convinced you - then make time for vacation simply because it is fun and you will get all these benefits in with the package! Without rest we cannot be at our most healthy in mind, body and spirit so make time for time off and become your best self!
