Meditation | Why Bother?
Meditation is everywhere these days - it has gone from being something that only a few people made time for to being recommended by doctors, bosses and fashion magazines. So what is the big deal? Can breathing quietly really change that much?
Meditation is the process of training your mind to focus and not be swayed by fleeting thoughts. Mindfulness helps us to observe our thoughts and feelings without judgement and then to let them pass. You are fully awake but not focused on whatever may be going on around you. It takes practice but even as little as 2 minutes everyday is said to have positive benefits.
So how does it make a difference?
Meditation can both help our bodies to cope with stress and reduce symptoms of disorders brought on or worsened by stress.
Many people with anxiety disorders who practice meditation find their anxiety decreases including symptoms such as phobias and panic attacks.
Increases self awareness
Meditation can help you to understand your thought patterns and to get control over them, even helping you to become happier and more calm.
Those who practice meditation have reported being able to focus for longer without getting distracted and for some it has even improved their memory.
There are just a few of the reported benefits and with just a short practice each day you can experience these things for yourself. A couple of apps that we recommend that can help get you started are called Calm and Headspace and they will guide you in your daily practice. Take some time to breathe and see what it does for you.
Meditation is like a gym in which you develop the mental muscles of calm and insight.
