The Different Faces of Anxiety



40 million Americans are thought to be affected by anxiety every year making it something that each one of us will be touched by at some point in our lives. We all feel anxious now and then but when those worries become intrusive and we can’t get control of them that we may need to seek help.


How anxiety impacts us can be very different meaning it isn’t always easy to identify. One person may have one or two very striking symptoms, while another may have many mild symptoms. One person will experience anxiety most of the day, rarely feeling relaxed, while another will be triggered by specific circumstances, places or people.


Below are just some of the ways that we might experience anxiety:

  • Intrusive worried thoughts

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • A sense of dread

  • Headaches

  • Stomach aches and/or nausea

  • Hot flushes

  • Overthinking

  • Feeling like you aren’t present in reality

  • Heart palpitations

  • Excessive sweating

  • Racing thoughts

  • Grinding teeth especially at night

  • Always needing reassurance

A great place to start is your primary healthcare provider who can connect you with mental health services local to you. Alternatively, visit the website for The Anxiety and Depression Association of America to find counseling services in your area.
